As well as the obvious musical and technical aspects of learning the organ, James' teaching incorporates performance coaching and help with managing nerves, biomechanics, relaxation techniques, exam training and improvisation. In addition, James has a wealth of experience both in conducting and in choral and orchestral direction. He provides coaching in these skills to his pupils either as part of, or independently from organ tuition.
Help with conducting, rehearsing and managing choirs will be of particular interest to those thinking of applying for organ scholarships at Oxford and Cambridge colleges or for musical directorships, but each of these skills will be of help to all prospective organists and can be more or less heavily emphasised to cater to the needs of the individual pupil.
